Author: Vivek Kuriyal

The major portion of Lantau Island has been designated as Country Park area and its green tranquil environment is the perfect setting for nature lovers and hikers. Lantau Island Hong Kong begins at Ngong Ping with beautiful views over Shek Pik. The delightful rural areas have a peaceful charm about their environment. At Ngong Ping one will find the world's tallest, outdoor, seated bronze Buddha statue and the Po Lin Monastery. The Giant Buddha is 34 metre high and sits on a lotus throne and weighs 250 tonnes. The Po Lin Monastery amidst spectacular mountain scenery sits on the 520 metre high Ngong Ping plateau has a large vegetarian restaurant and opens daily between 9am to 6 pm.

From Ngong Ping one can head towards Tung Chung Valley to view Hong Kong's second highest mountain, Lantau Peak. The route towards Lantau Peak has a lot of natural woodland with hillside streams. In these streams one will find a lot of dragonflies, freshwater fish and even a few rare amphibians. In the upper valley one will find woodland and birds. To have a good view of Hong Kong International Airport one can stop for a while at the Po Lam Monastery at Tei Tong Tsai on the way to Lo Hon Temple. The Lo Hon Temple built by lay Buddhists opens from 8am to 4 pm.
